We must commit to continued criminal justice reform.

Although Louisiana no longer has the ignominious (and expensive) title of “Incarceration Capital,” further work must be done to ensure that savings are reinvested in community support programs. We must build upon the reform successes adopted in 2017 and adjust as necessary to ensure effectiveness and safety. To date, the reforms have resulted in $12 million in savings – funds which must be reinvested in evidence-based prison alternatives, victim services and recidivism-reduction programs.
